Reproduction WingsThese are found in several forms:
- Sterling silver metal wings with clutch back marked "sterling" or "800"
- Sterling silver metal wings with clutch back and blue enamel center marked "sterling" or "800"
- Cheap pot metal wings with or without blue enamel and clutch back
- Solid gold wings with clutch back and gold quality markings (These were made for AAM reunions according to our sources).
- Correctly made wings with an unmarked back and poor quality casting (often sold as "sand-cast" or "lost-wax casting"). These were fairly close copies made in the early 1990's from original wings. Be very careful as these are showing up in online auctions on what I have been told are copies of what is purported to be a sales card from a Saigon military insignia shop. This wing is especially scary because of the proper shield construction. This is the first I've seen in 6 years (a good sign I hope).
- Cloth wings on black and khaki cloth.
This is one of the areas most riddled with fraud. The key to distinguishing bad from good seems to be the rim around the face. I have not seen copy wings with this rim feature (yet) and I have never seen wings with a long "pin" on the back. As a warning, I've seen very worn, aged versions of the "blue enamel" center wings being sold as original.
