Post-Vietnam SAT ItemsSAT was sold back into private hands and existed until very recently.
Shortly after the dissolution of Air America, Inc. a number of ex-AAM aircraft found their way into private hands. At least one Caribou, a Beech 18 and a DC-3 were operated as "Air Cargo America." Pilot lore has these aircraft subcontracted to SAT for its Atlantic/South American routes. We have not been able to verify this -- but the aircraft existed and ACA was a Miami-based company that suffered a fatal crash of the Beech 18 shown here.
Otherwise, SAT was sold back to one of its founders and survived for some time. Throughout the post-war period SAT flew cargo and people and concentrated its efforts in Latin America (and in the post-war years Africa and other world-wide "hot-spots"). Eventually, SAT filed for bankruptcy and its owner relinquished its operating certificate back to the FAA. A new, non-related company was soon constituted under the name Southern Air, Inc. (SAI) and was based in Norwalk, CT (USA) and continues to exist.
