Southern Air Transport

An Air America, Inc. "sister company" that was bought into and then sold off into private hands and existed until very recently. SAT flew cargo and people around Southeast Asia on limited runs but concentrated its efforts in Latin America (and in the post-war years Africa). Thank you to the contributors. Click here for items from post-war SAT.

Re: SAT-Atlantic Cap Badges:

WE WORE A BLACK HAT,..THE SAME STYLE AIRLINE HAT AS THE PACIFIC DIVISION'S GRAY HAT, ONLY BLACK. WE WORE THE SAME GOLD HAT EMBLEM THAT YOU HAVE POSTED FOR THE S.A.T. ATLANTIC DIVISION.  ( THAT'S THE EMBLEM THAT HAS "SOUTHERN AIR" PRINTED ON IT, AND THE GOLD WREATH COMING UP FROM THE BOTTOM TO FRAME THE EMBLEM).   SOME OF THE ATL-DIV S.A.T. PILOTS WORE THE SAME DESIGN HAT EMBLEM,..ONLY EMBROIDERED IN GOLD DIRECTLY ONTO THE BLACK HAT.  ( A "SOFT" EMBLEM, RATHER THAN A "HARD" METAL EMBLEM. )

Re: SAT-Atlantic Wings:

INTERESTING THOUGH, THE WHOLE TIME I FLEW WITH SOUTHERN AIR TRANSPORT ATLANTIC DIVISION, ( WHICH WAS 3 MONTHS SHORT OF 10 YEARS, `66 -`75, ) WE NEVER WORE PILOT'S WINGS.  WE NEVER WORE THEM ON THE WHITE, OPEN COLLAR AIRLINE SHIRT, OR ON THE FULL DRESS AIRLINE UNIFORM.  DON'T KNOW WHY. THE COMPANY HAD THEM AT OUR MIAMI OPERATIONS OFFICE, BUT THEY WERE NEVER GIVEN TO THE PILOTS.

I KNOW THEY HAD THEM BECAUSE I SAW THEM. ONE DAY I ASKED THE CHIEF PILOT HOW COME S.A.T. DIDN'T HAVE PILOT'S WINGS?  HE SAID, "OH, WE'VE GOT WINGS." AND HE SHOWED ME A BOX FULL OF S.A.T. WINGS,..ALL KINDS,..FIRST OFFICER'S, CAPTAIN'S, ETC. ( THEY WERE OF A LIGHT BRONZE OR GOLD COLOR. AND LOOKED RATHER CHEAP.)  I ASKED IF I COULD HAVE A PAIR.  HE SAID "NO, WE DON'T WEAR THEM."

I TOLD HIM I DIDN'T WANT THEM TO WEAR,..BUT WOULD LIKE TO HAVE A PAIR AS A "KEEPSAKE" OR "SOUVENIR" TO REMEMBER MY DAYS WITH S.A.T.  HE STILL SAID "NO." OH WELL, A WHOLE BOX FULL OF THEM,..AND I NEVER GOT JUST ONE PAIR!

RE: SAT-Atlantic Uniforms:

WHEN FLYING OUT OF THE MIAMI BASE OF OPERATIONS, THE UNIFORM WAS BLACK SHOES, BLACK PANTS, WHITE, SHORT SLEEVED AIRLINE SHIRT WITH THE APPROPRIATE RANK EPAULETTES. OPEN COLLAR, NO NECKTIE. HOWEVER, IF YOU HAD A FLIGHT NORTH OF MIAMI, SAY INTO NEW YORK'S JFK, THEN YOU WERE REQUESTED TO WEAR A BLACK NECKTIE.

IN APPROXIMATELY 1967, SAT-ATL DECIDED TO ACQUIRE "AIRLINE UNIFORMS" FOR FLIGHT CREWS. THESE FULL UNIFORMS WERE TO BE WORN ON ANY FLIGHT "NORTH" OF MIAMI, AND THE OPEN COLLAR WHITE SHIRT WITH EPAULETTES WERE TO BE WORN ON FLIGHTS "SOUTH" OF MIAMI.

THE COMPANY LET US LOOK AT BOOKS OF "AIRLINE UNIFORMS OF THE WORLD." THE COMPANY ALLOWED THE FLIGHT CREWS TO VOTE ON THE PARTICULAR AIRLINE UNIFORM WE LIKED. ( I THOUGHT A NICE DARK BLUE WITH GOLD ARM RANK-STRIPES WOULD BE GOOD.) WELL, THE MAJORITY OF THE CREWS VOTED FOR THE AIRLINE UNIFORM WORN BY SAUDI ARABIA.

THE SAUDI UNIFORM WAS BLACK WITH BLACK STRIPES. YOU COULDN'T HARDLY SEE THE BLACK RANK-STRIPES ON THE BLACK UNIFORM JACKET. ACTUALLY, THERE WAS A REASON FOR THEIR MADNESS! THEY FIGURED THAT WITH THE BLACK STRIPES ON THE BLACK SLEEVE THEY COULD GO DIRECTLY INTO THE AIRPORT LOUNGE/BAR AFTER LANDING AND NO ONE WOULD NOTICE THAT THEY WERE PILOTS. HEY, THESE SAT-ATL PILOTS WERE NO DUMMIES, THEY EVEN VOTED NOT TO WEAR WINGS ON THE UNIFORM.   ANYWAY, I THOUGHT THAT WAS AN INTERESTING LITTLE SIDE STORY YOU MIGHT NOT KNOW ABOUT. I DON'T STILL HAVE THAT BLACK-ON-BLACK UNIFORM JACKET, BUT IF I DID I'D SEND IT TO YOU.
